Nelson R. Schoon is a financial consultant for LPL Financial. He is also registered with LPL Financial to provide financial planning and investment advisory services.

A professional with 34 years of experience, Nelson offers all areas of financial planning with a heavy emphasis in farm/business succession planning, estate planning and investment planning. He works closely with each individual and family, providing the education and information needed to make intelligent decisions and a sound plan.

Nelson grew up on a farm and was active in 4-H showing Shorthorn steers. When his four daughters came of age, he assisted them in showing 4-H steers as well. “I wanted them to learn how to handle an animal 20 times their size and be in control,” he says, “and how to shovel manure.”

After graduating from Wabash College with a B.A. in both math and economics, Nelson served four years on the staff of Campus Crusade for Christ (now called CRU), an interdenominational Christian organization.

He has completed the College of Financial Planning (CFP®) program and holds the Accredited Investment Fiduciary (AIF®) designation.

Nelson also has experience in planning for families with handicapped adult children. (He has a mentally handicapped sister, step-sister and two step-brothers.)

Nelson has lived most of his life in Northwest Indiana, where he and his wife, Sandy, now reside.

Recently, Nelson participated in an evaluation of his top individual strengths. He believes you will find his strengths helpful if you are in the process of selecting a financial advisor :

  • POSITIVITY – Nelson is upbeat and can get clients excited about what they (clients) are going to do. With his infectious energy and optimistic outlook, he encourages others to keep their eyes on the positive by helping them see what’s going well for them.
  • ACTIVATOR – People with an Activator strength turn thoughts into action. Nelson’s enthusiasm energizes clients and makes them eager to tackle the task at hand. After all, having a plan is only step one; implementing it is crucial.
  • MAXIMIZER – Nelson seeks to transform something strong into something superb. He does not believe in the one-size-fits-all approach. Instead, he unearths each person’s special talents, skills, knowledge, mission, likes and dislikes — all of which offer insights into the type of support and partnership the client needs to thrive.
  • CONTEXT – Nelson looks to history to understand the present; he sees the link between where you have been and where you are going, which is extremely valuable for planning and decision making.
  • FUTURISTIC – Nelson energizes his clients and helps them develop their own visions for the future. This vision of tomorrow can inspire others to new heights.
